This is the choice that changes the look of a watch the most—more than the dial color. The same case can go from the office to the weekend depending on what's attached to it. Here's what really distinguishes the two.
Milanese Mesh
Born in Milan in the 19th century, this tightly woven steel mesh has a rare quality: it hugs the wrist like fabric. The links are so fine that they distribute pressure instead of marking the skin.
What it offers — millimeter-precise adjustment thanks to the sliding clasp, unlike leather which imposes its holes. It takes on body temperature in minutes and becomes unnoticeable. It fears neither sweat nor time: it's the same 316L stainless steel as the case.
What it requires — monthly cleaning, because its weave retains residue. And it can catch long hair if the clasp is poorly adjusted.
Leather
Leather does exactly the opposite: it doesn't disappear, it asserts itself. It adds warmth to a metal case and softens a watch that might otherwise appear severe.
What it offers — a patina. A three-year-old leather tells a story that no mesh ever will. It's also lighter, which matters on a slender wrist.
What it requires — moderation. Water, continuous perspiration, and perfumes damage it. Expect two to three years of daily use before replacement.
How to Decide, Practically
- You wear the same watch every day, summer and winter — mesh. It can take a beating.
- You're looking for discretion under a shirt cuff — leather. It's thinner and doesn't clink.
- Your wrist is slender — leather visually lightens; a wide mesh can look massive.
- You sweat easily — mesh, without hesitation. Leather is unforgiving.
- You want a dress watch for the evening — both work: a rose gold mesh is more radiant, a black leather more sober.
The Good News: You Don't Have to Choose
All our straps are interchangeable. The same case can accommodate either leather or mesh, and the exchange takes only a few seconds.
This is by far the cheapest way to have two watches. La Reine d'Or, delivered with a rose gold Milanese mesh, becomes a completely different watch on black leather. Conversely, l'Ambre and its brown alligator leather gain modernity on a mesh.
The Only Measurement to Check
The lug width: the distance between the two lugs of the case, where the strap attaches. Our women's 36 mm models take 18 mm, our men's 41 mm models take 20 mm. This measurement is listed in the Details tab of each product page.
A strap that is too narrow leaves a visible gap on each side; too wide, it won't fit. There's no in-between.
